Week of June 3-7, 2013

I cannot believe it is the last week of school already.  I have enjoyed working with the children this year!

In the Kindergarten Groups we will have Skippy Jon Jones Day on Monday!  The other days we will have a variety of games that review spelling and reading CVC and Sight Words.

In the First Grade Groups we will have a variety of games that review spelling and reading Long Vowel Words and Sight Words.

In the Second Grade Groups we will have a variety of games that review spelling and reading words with Vowel Teams.

Have a wonderful and restful summer.  Please let me know if you need any suggestions to keep your child busy with reading, spelling, and writing over the summer!

Week of May 27-31, 2013

In the Kindergarten Groups, we will be reviewing how to read and spell CVC words, sentence structure and middle vowel sounds.  Our last assessment will be on Friday 5/31/13.  Please look at the blogs from the previous weeks for examples to practice!

In the First Grade Groups, we are going to do a quick unit on long-consonant-silent e words.  Words to practice reading and spelling are: dime, home, Pete, fire, lime, cake, cape, joke, tube.  We only have two trick words to practice which are: nothing, does.  Our assessment on this quick Unit 14 is Friday 5/31/13.

On the Second Grade Groups, we are wrapping up Unit 15, on words with ue, oo, ew and ou.  Our assessment on this unit will be Friday 5/31/13.  Please look at the blog from the previous week for examples to practice!

Hope everyone had a wonderful 3 day weekend!  We have two more weeks of school, so I know the students are getting excited, but please let your child know that we still have learning to do!

Week of May 20-24, 2013

In the Kindergarten Groups, we will continue working on reading and spelling CVC words, sight words, and sentences.  We will also work on identifying the middle vowel sounds in CVC words also.  Refer to last weeks post for words to practice reading and spelling. 

In the First Grade Groups, we will wrap up Unit 11 which concentrates on double syllable and compound words, along with the sight (trick)words.  Refer to last weeks post for words to practice reading and spelling. Our assessment will be on Friday, May 24, 2013. 

In the Second Grade Groups, we will concentrate on our last unit of the year, which is Unit 15.  This unit is about the sounds of /ow/, /oo/, /ew/, and /ue/.  Words to practice reading and spelling are: scoop, group, due, broom.  Our trick words for this week are: January, February and July.  

REMINDER: Monday, May 27, 2013 is Memorial Day.  This is a holiday for students and staff, so there is NO SCHOOL!

Week of May 13-17, 2013

In the Kindergarten groups, we will be reviewing CVC words, along with middle vowel sounds.  Some words to practice spelling, reading and identifying the middle vowel sounds are: cat, bug, web, pig, mop, tap, cut, jet, fit.

In the First Grade groups, we will keep on reviewing double syllable and compound words in Unit 11.  Words to keep on practicing (spelling and reading) are: dentist, catfish, expect, insist, public, picnic, napkin, absent. Please keep on reviewing our trick (sight) words also, which are: people, Mr., Mrs., year, says, little. 

In the Second Grade groups, we will wrap up Unit 14, with the sounds of /ou/ and /ow/.  Words to practice spelling and reading are: shower, boyscout, couch, power, shower, cloudy, frowned.  Please keep on reviewing our trick (sight) words also, which are: Wednesday, Saturday, Thursday, bought, library, piece.

Week of May 6-10, 2013

I will have to test all students in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade this week for the end of the year benchmark assessment.  I will resume my regular schedule of pulling the students the week of May 13th.  I will certainly miss my friends this week, and please continue to work on concepts that were taught the week of April 29th.

Week of April 29-May 3, 2013

In the Kindergarten groups we will be going over the word family-ub.  Practice reading and spelling words such as cub, flub, hub, nub, rub, sub, tub.  We also started reviewing sentence structure this past Friday, so practice that with your kids.  Practice reading and writing sentence.  Some examples are: The cat sat on the mat.  A dog is on a log.

In the first grade groups we will start Unit 11, which concentrates on 2 syllable words.  Words to practice spelling and reading are: catfish, bathtub, pumpkin, upset, sunset.  Our trick words (sight words) for this week are: people, Mrs., Mr.

In the second grade groups we will start Unit 14, which concentrates on ou and ow.  Words to practice spelling and reading are: brown, trout, outside, cloudy, couch, power, boy-scout. Our trick words (sight words) for this week are: Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday.

Week of April 22-26, 2013

In the Kindergarten Groups we will be going over the word family -ug.  Words to practice reading and spelling are: bug, dug, hug, jug, lug, mug, pug, rug, tug.  

In the First Grade Groups we will wrap up Unit 10 (blends), and concentrate on the suffix -s. Words to practice reading and spelling are: drinks, blimps, blinks, slumps, plants, stings.  Don't forget to practice reading and spelling our trick words (sight words): called, down, many, before, how, each.

In the Second Grade Groups we will wrap up Unit 13 (long o: oa,oe, ow, o-e) and concentrate on double syllable words.  Words to practice reading and spelling are: explode, window, below, toaster, roadblock, snowstorm, charcoal.  Don't forget to practice reading and spelling our trick words (sight words): Monday, Tuesday, cousin, lose, dance, beautiful.

Week of April 15-19, 2013

In the Kindergarten Groups we will be going over the word family -ot.  Words to practice spelling and reading are: cot, dot, hot, lot, not, pot, tot, shot.  On Friday, 4/19/13, we will have an assessment on CVC words learned so far (reading and spelling), along with identifying the middle vowel sound in the CVC word.

In the First Grade Groups we will continue Unit 10, that concentrates on blends.  Words to practice reading and spelling are: twist, grump, blimp, crust, slump, blink.  

In the Second Grade Groups we will start Unit 13, words with long o, spelled with oa, oe, and ow.  Words to practice reading and spelling are: boat, foam, low, doe, flow, grow, load, thrown, loaf, coast, mow.

Week of April 8-12, 2013

In the Kindergarten Groups we will be going over the word family -op.  Words to practice reading and spelling are: cop, hop, mop, pop, top.  

In the First Grade groups we will start Unit 10 which focuses on 5 word blends.  Words to practice reading and spelling are: stamp, stump, shrimp, trunk, trust, grump, twist, blimp, shrink. 

In the Second Grade groups we will wrap up Unit 12, which concentrates on the sounds of /oy/ and /oi/.  Words to practice reading and spelling are: pointer, toys, noisy, destroy, spoiled, tinfoil, enjoyment, joined.

Week of March 25-29, 2013

In the 2nd grade groups we will begin Unit 12, the sounds of /oi./-spelled with oi and oy.  We will briefly touch on this concept this week since Spring Break is around the corner!  Words to practice reading and spelling are: coil, boy, boil, toys, foiled, coin.

In the 1st grade groups we will wrap up Unit 9 on closed syllables and beginning and final blends.  Our assessment will be on Wednesday 3/27/13.  Words to practice reading and spelling are: munch, plugs, rocks, brings, gold, clubs, puffs, test.  

In the Kindergarten groups we will go over the word family -og.  Words to practice reading and spelling are: dog, fog, hog, jog, log, bog.

Thursday 3/28 is Field Day! Hope the weather will be wonderful.  
Friday 3/29 is a Teacher In-Service Day: No School for Students

Spring Break is Monday 4/1-Friday 4/5!  Students will return on Monday 4/8/13!

In the Kindergarten groups we will be going over the word family -in.  Please practice reading and spelling words that end in -in.  Examples are: bin, fin, pin, tin, win, chin, shin.

In the 1st grade groups we will begin Unit 9 which concentrates on closed syllables.  Those are words that have a (one) short vowel in the middle or the beginning of the word.  Examples for students to practice reading and spelling are: brush, melt, at, end, act, frog, up, yuck, plugs, lunch, drill.

Int he 2nd grade groups we will wrap up Unit 11, long e vowel teams (ea, ee, ey).  This week we will concentrate on double syllables.  Examples for the students to practice reading and spelling are: donkey, hockey, sneakers, chimney, peacock, thirteen, beehive. Our assessment on Unit 11 will be on Friday 3/22/13.

Week of March 11-15, 2013

In the Kindergarten groups we will be going over the word family -it.  Practice reading and spelling words with-it.  Examples are: bit, fit, hit, kit, lit, pit, sit.

In the First Grade groups we will be finishing up Unit 8 (blends and digraph blends).  Our assessment will be on Thursday 3/14/13, since students have a field trip on Friday 3/15.  Examples to practice reading and spelling are: pinch, frogs, blocks, vest, brag, chunks.

In the 2nd Grade groups we will start Unit 11 which concentrates on long e (ea, ee, ey).  Examples to practice reading and spelling are: key, meat, sweep, eat, jeep.

In the Kindergarten groups we will be going over the -ip word family.  Words to practice reading and spelling are: dip, hip, lip, nip, rip, sip, tip.  We will also have an assessment on Friday 3/8/13 on simple CVC words, middle vowel sounds and word segmentation. 

In the First Grade groups we will continue reviewing blends, but add a twist to it-digraph blends.  Words to practice reading and spelling are: lunch, shrug, shred, ranch, crash, clock, chomp.

In the Second Grade groups we will continue learning about long a (ay/ay), but add double syllables to our reading and spelling.  Words to practice reading and spelling are: daisy, mermaid, raindrops, subway, crayon. The assessment on long a (Unit 10) will be on Friday 3/8/13.

In the Kindergarten groups, we will be going over the word family -ig.  Some words to practice to read and spell are: pig, wig, jig, big.

In the 1st grade groups, we will be going over 4 words blends (cvcc, ccvc words).  Some words to practice spelling and reading are: best, slip, crab, jump.

In the 2nd grade groups, we will be going over long a words, using ay and ai.  Some words to practice reading and spelling are: play, train, bait, tray.

Week of February 18-22, 2013

Kindergarten Groups:  We are going over the word family -am. Words to practice to read and spell are jam, ham, Pam, Sam, yam. 

First Grade Groups: We are reviewing the glued sounds of ang, ing, ong, ung, ank, ink, onk, unk with the suffix -s.  Words to practice to read and spell are winks, honks, songs, rings.  Our assessment will be Friday 2/22/13.

Second Grade Groups: We are reviewing er, ir, and ur with 2 syllable words.  Words to practice to read and spell are survive, thirty, corner, surfer. Our assessment will be Friday 2/22/13.

Week of February 4-8, 2013

Kindergarten Groups:  We will be reading and spelling the -ap family words.

First Grade Groups: I will introduce glued sounds (ank, ink, onk, unk). We will do many different activities to help read and spell these types of words.

Second Grade Groups: We will continue our unit on ar and or words.  Our assessment on these types of words will be on Friday 2/8/13.

Week of January 28-February 1, 2013

In the Kindergarten groups we will be work on reading, spelling and rhyming words in the -at family.  Examples are words such as bat, cat, rat.  We will have a quick informal assessment on Friday 2/1.

In the first grade groups we will wrap our our unit on the suffix -s- with an assessment on Friday 2/1.  I am very proud of all study in my 1st grade groups, they are working hard on this concept (and it is sometimes trick to her the sounds before the -s-) :)

In the 2nd grade groups we will start our unit on words with the sounds of /ar/ and /or/.  This is sometimes a hard concept to learn, so practice words such as storm, harm, corn, and yarn.

Friday 2/1 is our 100th day celebration!  So I invite any male figure to come in to celebrate with us so we can get our 100 BookMEN!

Week of January 21-25, 2013

Kindergarten Groups: We will be going over short vowels (a, e, i, o, u). We will talk about how important vowels are and learning how to identify them in short CVC words. Examples are cat, wet, pig, mop, bug. I will also be assesing them on lowercase and uppercase identification and writing formation, and letter sounds.  We will be reading and writing words next week!

1st Grade Groups: We will keep on reviewing the suffix -s.  On Friday students will be bring home a quick reader to share and read with their family!  Please listen to them read.

2nd Grade Groups: We will be going over the suffixes -ly, -ty, -y, and review open syllables (long vowels).  Our assessment on Unit 7 will be Friday 1/25.

Remember NO school on Monday, 1/21/13!

Week of January 14-18, 2013

I am all done with testing!  I am very excited about picking up my friends (which I now have a few more new faces to teach!)

In my Kindergarten groups we will just review the sounds of the alphabet with an array of activites using picture cards, i-Pads, SMARTBoards, magnets, gel boards, etc.  We will begin on sounding and blending words next week.

In my Level 1 groups we will be working on Unit 6, which concentrates on the suffix s.  We will be reading and spelling words and sentences with words with -s- at the end.  Examples are: halls, jams, sits, bags.

In my Level 2 groups we will be working on Unit 7, which concentrates on open syllables.  Those are words with the long vowel sounds at the end of the syllable (word).  We will be reading and spelling those types of words.  Examples are: shy, duty, remote.

Reminder: No School on Friday 1/18 and Monday 1/21!

Week of January 7-11, 2013

Welcome Back!  Hope all of you had a wonderful break and ready for the year 2013!

This week I will be testing all Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade students with DIBELS.

I will start pulling my groups on Monday, January 14, 2013 and begin our next units.
